Busy weeks fill every spare moment. Between work, errands and the everyday things that need doing, time for ourselves can easily slip to the bottom of the list.

As summer slowly gives way to autumn, there’s something comforting about making room for small, familiar pleasures. A few pages of a book, a cup of hot tea or a gentle walk can become a welcome pause in the day.

A good book and a soft blanket

There’s a particular pleasure in settling into your favourite spot with a book and pulling a soft blanket over your knees. Leave your phone just out of reach, find your page and permit yourself to stay for a while.

You don’t have to finish a chapter or choose something challenging. A familiar story, a few poems or a magazine you’ve been meaning to read will do. What matters is having a moment you can enjoy without watching the clock.

Keep your book and blanket close to your favourite chair, ready for the next quiet evening.

A cup of tea, enjoyed slowly

Making tea is a small ritual in itself: choosing a blend, waiting for the kettle and watching the colour deepen as it brews.

Pour it into a mug you love and sit somewhere comfortable. Notice the warmth in your hands and the steam rising into the afternoon light. Let those first few sips be a pause before you return to whatever needs your attention.

Some days, you might enjoy your tea alongside a book. On others, looking out of the window is enough.

A walk with no need to rush

When you’ve spent much of the day indoors, stepping outside can offer a welcome change of pace. Pull on a cosy sweater, wrap a soft scarf around your neck if the air feels cool, and take a familiar route.

Early autumn gives you plenty to notice: the first yellow leaves among the green, sunlight catching the branches and the gentle rustle of trees overhead. You might wander through a park or simply take the longer way home.

Let the walk be as short or as slow as you like. There’s no distance to reach.

Making a little room for yourself

These rituals are easy to return to because they ask for very little. A blanket and a book. A favourite mug. A warm layer by the door.

Choose whichever suits your day, and leave a little space for it. Even in a busy week, there can be an evening chapter, a quiet cup of tea or a few minutes beneath the trees.

Which little ritual will you make time for this week?
