Discover the Gunn Tartan – Bold, Historic & Unmistakably Highland
In the world of Highland textiles, few tartans carry a story as powerful and dramatic as the Gunn tartan. Rich with Norse origins, heroic legends, and centuries of resilience, it is a pattern that feels as bold today as it did in the time of the Viking raiders and medieval Highland chiefs. And now, this iconic design lives on in beautifully woven scarves and blankets available on our website, bringing ancient Scottish heritage into modern wardrobes and homes.
The Gunn Clan traces its beginnings to Gunni, grandson of the legendary Viking Sweyn Asleifsson—often called “the Ultimate Viking” in the Orkneyinga Saga. Through marriage to Ragnhild, heiress of the Earls of Orkney, the clan inherited vast lands in Caithness and Sutherland in the late 12th century. Their name itself comes from the Norse “Gunni,” meaning “war,” perfectly capturing the strength of this Highland family.

By the 13th century, Clan Gunn had become one of the most powerful clans in Caithness. Their crest—a hand gripping a basket-hilt sword—symbolises their motto: Aut Pax Aut Bellum, “Either peace or war.” This duality defines the Gunn identity: fierce warriors, yet honourable and loyal.
Throughout the Middle Ages, the Gunns became known for legendary feuds, especially with Clan Keith. These conflicts, steeped in tragedy and bravery, have become part of Highland folklore. Yet the clan endured. Even when the Highland Clearances forced many Gunns to leave their homeland, their spirit lived on across Scotland and around the world.
Today, Clan Gunn remains vibrant, with a recognised chief—Iain Alexander Gunn of Gunn—and an active global society preserving their legacy.
The Gunn tartan, with its deep greens, blues, and black tones, reflects the rugged Caithness landscape: windswept coastlines, cold seas, and dramatic skies. It’s a versatile tartan—bold yet easy to style—which is why it works beautifully in both fashion accessories and home décor.

Whether you wrap up in a Gunn tartan scarf for everyday wear or add a cosy Gunn tartan blanket to your living space, you’re not just choosing a pattern—you’re wearing centuries of history, strength, and Highland pride.
