Black Watch Tartan – Tradition, Courage, and Modern Elegance
Origins in the Highlands
In 1725, General George Wade was authorised to form six “watch” companies to patrol the Scottish Highlands. This unit was created after the first Jacobite rising of 1715. The six companies that were established became known as the Black Watch: three from Clan Campbell and one each from Clan Fraser of Lovat, Clan Munro, and Clan Grant.
A Regiment with a Name and a Legacy
Today, it is known as The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion, Royal Regiment of Scotland (3 SCOTS) and serves as an infantry battalion within the Royal Regiment of Scotland. In Gaelic, the regiment was called Am Freiceadan Dubh, meaning the Dark or Black Watch. The name referred both to the dark hues of their tartan and to their role of “watching over” the Highlands.
The Colours of the Black Watch
The company wore a tartan in black, dark blue, and green, woven by more than sixty weavers in Strathspey, in the county of Clan Grant. In the Key Pattern Book of 1819 by William Wilson & Sons, suppliers of military tartans, it was noted: “It is said to be the tartan of Clan Munro – but much more likely to be that of Clan Campbell.” It is also possible that this pattern was popular and widely worn by many different clans across the Highlands.
An Open Tartan for Everyone
Although still strongly associated with the Royal Highland Regiment, the Black Watch is considered an “open tartan,” meaning anyone can wear it. It has no exclusive ties to a specific clan but instead symbolises tradition and courage. Scots wear it at events such as Highland Games and weddings. It is also a favourite among celebrities and fashion models. Even Theresa May, during her time as Prime Minister, appeared in a Black Watch tartan suit.
Timeless Versatility
With its subtle, dark colours, the Black Watch tartan pairs beautifully with many other shades and fabrics. It works equally well in accessories such as scarves, trousers, and capes. Thanks to its versatility, the Black Watch tartan is truly suited to any occasion.
